PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Phoenix residents are banding together to end a string of break-ins by using their phones to connect and share information -- and they say technology is helping them keep the streets safe.

From 7th Avenue to 15th Avenue and from Camelback to the canal, residents in the Grandview neighborhood tell me that six people have been arrested this week and say it's because they're using an app called Nextdoor to share information.

Residents walk their dogs down quiet streets, visit with neighbors and take pride in keeping their lawns tidy, but since January, burglars have broken into homes here 25 times.

"They're breaking in when people are gone, usually during the day.. coming in through the back from what we've heard, breaking in through pet doors or jiggling open windows, grabbing pillowcases, running through grabbing valuables small electronics," said Erica Brooks.

Brooks is teaming up with her neighbors and using the Nextdoor app to share information about suspicious people and sketchy activity in the area.

"They grabbed a backpack out of this house and now they're driving down this particular street.. we call 911, report that information, but we also post on Nextdoor on the form," said Slade Grove, who adds that the app is like a private Facebook page for residents of a specific neighborhood.

"And we're using it to relay that information to the police department, saying this is what's going on in our neighborhood.. someone just posted info about it, can you please send a patrol car?"

Nextdoor makes sure the bad guys can't access the information by verifying users by sending a postcard with a unique code, calling the residence or checking a credit card billing address.

The Phoenix Police Department has officially teamed up with Nextdoor to work with citizens.
