Suspicious fire destroys Edison, NJ elementary school

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The smoldering rubble was a scene too much to bear for Michael, a fifth grader at James Monroe Elementary School in Edison New Jersey.

“It feels like home” he said.

Flames broke out at his beloved school just before 8pm last night.

It took firefighters more than 3 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Officials are calling the fire suspicious because of how quickly the flames spread.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and so does the future of the approximately 500 students who went to the school, grades K through 5.

Many students now asking why.

“It's horrible, why would anyone want to do this?” one student said.

Most other elementary schools in Edison are full so officials are looking into finding neighboring communities to possible take in students..

But clearly for some students nothing will be able to take their schools place.

Superior Court Judge Mark Cirocca ruled Thursday in favor of the Township of Berkeley Heights and Mayor Joe Bruno in their case against former Police Chief Mike Mathis, who will not be reinstated to his position. In his decision, Cirocco stated that Mathis failed to demonstrate "by clear and convincing evidence" that Bruno lacked the authority to unilaterally accept Mathis' resignation as set forth in the protocols of the Berkeley Heights Township Municipal Code.
