Baby abandoned in stroller inside Harlem park; mother arrested

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A baby boy was found abandoned in a stroller at a park in Harlem where temperatures hovered around freezing. Now his mother is under arrest.

Police say they responded to a 911 call about the child at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday at West 143rd Street and 7th Ave.

The boy's mother, Kenyetta Rowell, 18, of Staten Island, went to a police precinct Monday, where she was later arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, failure to exercise control over a minor and false reporting, the AP reported.

The man who found the child and alerted local firefighters who then called police spoke with Fox 5 News:

"I look out the window, there's a stroller in the park. I'm thinking it's a toy stroller. Not in a million years I would think it was a child in the stroller. I rush down stairs and that's what I saw. Just like right now I was at a loss for words."

The man said the stroller was near a gate and the boy was wrapped well and was wearing a shearling hat. He appeared to be alert and in good condition.

"I can't imagine anyone could leave an adorable baby like that in the cold."

The child who is approximately three to six months old was picked up by EMS and brought to Harlem Hospital for observation. He was then placed in the custody of the Administration for Children's Services, said police.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
