Police Search For Suspect In Attempted Abduction of 14-Year Old

Posted: Updated:

Police in Camden are hoping you can help identify a man who tried to abduct a 14-year old girl. It happened last night near the intersection of 32nd street and Rosedale Avenue.

Charles Turner is one unhappy grandfather after police say a man tried to abduct his 14-year old granddaughter as she left the Dudley Grange Park in East Camden just after 6 p.m. on Sunday.

"I don't like it one way, shape or form. It's always a scary situation, regardless whether it's a relative of yours or somebody else's child. It's the way of the world today," Turner told FOX 29.

Turner and police say his granddaughter fought off the suspect and escaped as she headed towards 32nd Street off Rosedale just outside the sprawling park.

"She's okay, she's upset because of what happen and what someone tried to do to her yeah," Turner added.

"I feel bad. I got a granddaughter, she's ten," said neighbor Mary Dunmore.

Police say the man also followed the girl on foot before returning to his car and driving away. Police are asking for the public's help in finding the suspect and the car.

"It's an older model, four door Pontiac, with rear tinted windows and rust on the side of the car," said Det. Sgt Janell Simpson of the police department's Special Victims Unit.

Police stepped up patrols in the park, which is located near two schools. Officers on foot patrol and in unmarked cars combed the area Monday, while detectives searched through surveillance video from city cameras along the suspect's escape route down Westfield Avenue.

"It's sad that you got to be out with your children to watch them while they playing," Dunmore said.

"I'm very proud that she called the cops and reported it so that way it may not happen to somebody else's child," Turner said.

Police say children in that area should travel in pairs or with their parents. If you have any information on the suspect or the suspect's car seen leaving that area around 6 on Sunday, you can call the police tip line at 856-757-7042.
