Court extends freeze on Michigan gay marriages

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - The Six Circuit Court of Appeals granted Tuesday a stay on same-sex marriages in Michigan pending the final disposition of the state's appeal.

The temporary stay was set to expire Wednesday, March 26.

"For gay marriage, it's going to happen whether people are supportive of it or against it," pollster Eric Foster believes. He says to expect lots of talk about same-sex marriages in the months leading up to the November elections.

"I would say you'll see a significant increase in Super PAC spending based on this issue to try and help wedge candidates one way or the other," he says.

Democratic candidates are certainly talking about it, criticizing the governor and the attorney general for appealing the federal court ruling overturning Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage.

"This is not about politics - this is about dignity and equality for every family. This is about equal protection, as Judge Friedman said, for our children here in Michigan, and so I don't think this is a time for politics," says Mark Schauer, the Democratic candidate for governor.

"This case is going to the Supreme Court regardless of what Bill Schuette does, and he should withdraw his appeal at once," says Mark Totten, the Democratic candidate for attorney general.

"I, as one attorney general, would encourage the United States Supreme Court to make this decision as soon as possible and resolve it. But, again, this will be up for the courts," Schuette said Monday as he launching his re-election campaign.

Meanwhile, Gov. Rick Snyder has been conspicuously silent in all of this, issuing only a statement that the courts would decide.

"It doesn't help him at all to get into this fight. Republicans are going to vote for him regardless," says Foster.
