A Delaware County bus driver is under arrest. He's accused of forcing little kids out of his bus blocks away from their actual stop. FOX 29's Chris O'Connell went looking for answers this afternoon. He also talked to some very upset parents.
For about 20 kids in Darby, it was a bus ride they'll never forget Monday. Some parents of kids as young as 5-years old thought their child was missing for 20 minutes.
Now that bus driver is under arrest and police are asking some serious questions about school safety.
55-year old Wesner Laventure was arrested for child endangerment. Police say he took 20 students from Ardmore Avenue Elementary on his bus, but not one of them got to their bus stop.
Some students were dropped off nearly a mile away. Some parents couldn't find their kids for a half hour.
"She said she was terrified. All the kids thought they were being kidnapped. He took them to Springfield a whole town away-they were scared," said Laura Harvey.
Darby Police say the man driving the bus was actually a maintenance man who filled in to drive at the last minute.
They say he actually drove his route backwards. Students say they tried to convince the driver he was going the wrong way but didn't' listen.
Police say Laventure, a Sharon Hill resident, had given no explanation to why he would do this.
Police also tell us all of the busses have a GPS tracking system, but they couldn't get in touch with the driver for more than 20 minutes. Now they have some serious questions for the school district.
In a statement from the bus company, they say the driver has been removed from service and they are cooperating with police in the investigation.
