Rabid coyote attacks woman and dog in Rockland County

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A morning walk with her dog quickly turned into a terrifying experience for a Rockland County woman. She actually put herself in between her pet and a coyote as it advanced on them in a driveway and attacked her.

Mary Lou Gardner is recovering but has to receive rabies shots after a 50-pound coyote suddenly lunged at them and bit her. She wouldn't leave her dog, and the coyote would leave her, either. Mary Lou's neighbor Joe Knizeski heard her screams. He saw the coyote jumping on her back, so he started to distract it. It got off Mary Lou and started chasing Joe.

But police arrived within minutes and killed the coyote, which tested positive for rabies.

Mary Lou now has to have a series of shots. She is a bit battered and bruised but thankful.

Police say they haven't seen a recent rise in coyote calls but are asking residents to call their non-emergency number if they see any.

Wednesday was Mary Lou's birthday. She said rabies shots weren't exactly the kind of shots she was expecting to have.

Public officials and safety advocates worry there will be more drivers high on pot and a big increase in traffic deaths as states liberalize marijuana laws. It's not clear, though, whether those concerns are merited. Researchers are divided on the question. Studies of marijuana's effects show the drug can slow decision-making, decrease peripheral vision and impede multitasking.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
