Tech Neck: Use of mobile devices could cause bad health, posture

Chiropractors have warned that using mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets for long periods of time could lead to a lower life expectancy.

When people text, play games or are watching a video on their device, some go into a forward-leaning posture. This posture increases the risk of an earlier death in the elderly, and it may be decreasing the timeline of young people's lives as well.

"We tend to drop our heads forward which rounds the shoulders and this is what we term forward-leaning posture," said UCA executive member Estelle Zauner-Maughan.

Bad posture is just as big of a health risk as obesity, according to the United Chiropractic Association.

"People are now definitely at an increased risk of having problems through the top of their neck and back because of their posture, which is causing a change in the curve of the back. And there is an increased risk that they will develop this earlier on in life because of the length of time they've been sitting at computers or using mobile devices," Zauner-Maughan added.

Zauner-Maughan also said that when a person goes into the forward-leaning posture, it is then impossible for them to take in a full breath because of muscles being restricted. The ribs cannot move correctly, so ultimately the lungs and heart cannot function to their full potential.

The UCA is urging people to have their posture checked by a registered chiropractor. Also, it is important that people take the necessary steps to protect their posture and health.

"This isn't alarmist or scaremongering; it's what more and more research is telling us. And the good news is that it doesn't have to happen because it's something we all have a degree of control over," UCA chiropractor Edwina Waddell said.

Waddell has noticed the posture of forward-leaning becoming more prevalent at her practice.

"We can change our habits. For example, restrict the amount of time you spend on mobile devices. And bring them up to your eye level, so that you're not looking down," added Waddell.
