Car seat safety tips from Kohl's Cares Foundation

Posted: Updated:
The Kohl's Cares Foundation supports kids' health and education initiatives in communities nationwide.

From injury prevention, immunization and nutrition programs to scholarships, the Kohl's Cares Foundation has been funding these projects for over 10 years.

Renee Zarr with the Kohl's Injury Prevnetion Program offers up the following car seat safety tips:
  • Children should stay rear facing until 2 years old
  • All children are safest in a 5 pt harness
  • If a child is over 4 and 40 pounds, and MATURE enough to ride with a seat belt (not move it), then they can make the transition to a booster seat
  • All children should ride in the back seat until 13 years old
  • It's very important that caregivers read the manual to the vehicle and to the car seat to fully understand how to install the car seat in their vehicle
  • No thick clothing, coats or snow suits
  • Harness should always be snug on the child and chest clip at armpit level
  • Do not add anything to the car seat or use a mirror or retractable window shade in your vehicle
  • MI Law requires children be properly secured in a child restraint system (car seat or booster seat) until 4’9" tall or about 8-12 years old
  • When installing a car seat in the vehicle, caregivers can use the seat belt or LATCH if there vehicle is equipped. But NEVER use the lower anchors and seat belt together. A properly installed car seat will not move more then 1 inch in any direction
  • Caregivers are always welcome to come and visit certified car seat technicians at a car seat check in their community

It's not just the styles that have changed with weddings over the years -- it's also the technology. Disposable cameras used to be the norm, but now there's an even simpler way for the bride and groom to get some candid photos of their special day.
