Posted: Updated:

Consumer Reports issued safety scores for 2,591 U.S. hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to show how local hospitals stack up.

The report combines 5 key assessments to create a score from 1 to 100, dubbed the Consumer Reports' hospital Safety Score:

1. Hospital mortality (Including medical and surgical mortality)

2. Readmission

3. Overuse of CT scans

4. Hospital-acquired infections

5. Communication

*Mortality, readmission, and scanning apply to patients 65 or older, communication to all adults and hospital-acquired infections to all ages.

Of the 21 hospitals rated in the Twin Cities metro, three had a score higher than 65:

-St. Francis, Shakopee: 68

-Fairview Southdale, Edina: 67

-Ridgeview, Waconia: 65

Only two local hospitals scored below 50: Cambridge Medical Center and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Just 35 hospitals earned Consumer Reports' top rating in medical mortality, while66 received the lowest rating.

More hospitals did well in surgical mortality with 173 earning ConsumerReports' top rating, versus 228 hospitals receiving the lowest rating. Consumer Reports also found that for every 1,000 surgical patients who develop serious complications in a top-rated hospital, 87 or fewer die. However, Mina low-rated hospital, more than 132 die.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
