Fourth victim dies from SXSW injuries

Posted: Updated:

A fourth person has died from their injuries after the South By Southwest tragedy -- 19-year-old Deandre Tatum.

Curtisha Davis's aunt Shenikka met with us after the incident.

She told us Curtisha and Deandre Tatum had been dating for 3 years. They met at Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth and were in Austin for one of the SXSW concerts.

18-year-old Davis and 19-year-old Tatum were in a crowd in front of the Mohawk when police say 21-year-old Rashad Owens plowed his car through barricades killing 2 and injuring 23.

Since then, two more have died of their injuries...Tatum included.

One of Tatum's Fort Worth friends got the news in a text message during class Thursday.

"From the carelessness of one person, lives have been lost and now we're sitting here having to grieve over Dre when we shouldn't have to," said Briahna Jordan.

Davis was recently released from UMC Brackenridge and is now back home in Fort Worth. Tatum had been in a medically induced coma since the incident.

Maria Belyaeva was one of the 23 hospitalized. She still doesn't remember what happened because she blacked out after being hit.

"I've had a few checkups with the doctor you know just about my ankle. I finally got the staples removed," she said.

Belyaeva considers her group of friends fortunate. She feels for Tatum's family.

"I can't really imagine what that family is going through, I know that my friends and I have also had a rough experience but it's just...it's nowhere near that. And it's really upsetting the amount of people that this one person has affected in such a negative way. And I really hope that the others really do get better," she said.

Weeks after this tragedy the helping hands are still coming out of the woodwork. Victim Evan West worked at Violet Crown Cinema as a bartender. His wife Jamie is one of those that died in the incident. Violet Crown is doing everything they can to help Evan's family.

"Starting tomorrow and running through Thursday April 3rd, we're gonna donate 20% of all sales proceeds and that'll include tickets, food, beverage, everything...and we're gonna put that towards a fund for Evan's recovery," said David Gil with Violet Crown.

We did hear from Curtisha Davis's aunt Shenikka via text message. She says:

"Dre was a lovable person. He was respectful, kind, loving, funny, smart and most of all he loved my niece to death...I still remember I took them on Valentine's Day 2012 to Red Lobster, my niece's choice, and I still remember how hard he was smiling when he was with my niece. My heart is hurt, but I can't take my niece's pain away."

Of course, Rashad Owens has been charged with Capital murder. His first court date will be April 9th at 9:00.
