Job fair for military veterans

Posted: Updated:

Many soldiers trading in uniforms for a suit and tie attended the hiring our heroes job fair at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan.

"I just got back from tech school a few weeks ago and now I'm just looking for a job to pay the bills," said Diego Plata, who serves in the Air Force Reserve. "This is a great experience."

These Hiring Our Heroes jobs fair have been going on for three years all over the country. Organizers tell me that over 21,000 veterans, reservists, and their spouses have obtained jobs as results of these fairs.

This time last year, retired Master Sgt. Rebecca Newman of Queens was on the other side of the table as a job applicant, looking for her first civilian job after serving 20 years in the Air Force.

"It was a little overwhelming coming here," she said. "It's just a whole different world and the transition was a little bit of a challenge."

This event drew in over 600 job candidates and 110 employers. In the last two years, Capital One has hired over 1,500 veterans and their spouses.

"There's a combination of leadership, teamwork and creative problem-solving that any employer is looking for," said Capital One's Ben Lamm.

While getting a job is never an easy task, the reason for hiring a vet is simple.

"All of them have given to their state or nation and are great assets to any company," said Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy, the adjutant general of New York.
