Brewer action frees man after 49 years behind bars

PHOENIX (AP) - A man convicted of murdering his mother and step-father nearly 50 years ago is now free after being granted clemency by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The Arizona Capitol Times reports that Brewer's October approval of a sentence reduction for 65-year-old Patrick Maloney set the stage for his March 20 release on parole.

Maloney was 16 years old at the time of the 1964 killings. He was sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole.

Brewer reduced his sentence to 45 years to life in prison.

Her proclamation granting sentence reduction doesn't explain her decision, and her spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An Arizona Justice Project lawyer says Brewer had a state board's recommendation nearly four years before she acted on it.
