World Autism Day In New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
Ocean Township, New Jersey (MY9NJ) - Yesterday was World Autism Day and in the spirit of driving awareness to this disease, there were many events taking place across the Garden State that aimed to get more support for treatment and stability options for those who suffer from this developmental issue. Congressman Chris Smith hosted an event in Ocean Township to promote awareness for this important cause. The event was held at the Search Day School, founded in 1971 as the first school in New Jersey that focused specifically on the needs of autistic children.

During the event, Bobby Gallagher shared her stories about her two children, both diagnosed with Autism, and how she, along with the congressman, has been fighting for this cause for almost 17 years. Currently, the rate of autism has increased in the Unites States, with one-in-forty-five children being diagnosed with autism in New Jersey alone. This leaves the Garden State with the highest Autism rate compared to any other state in the country. Unfortunately, there is still no conclusive evidence of what causes autism which is why the Congressman believes this issue is so important to promote in order to get funding to continue research around this disease.

Although there is still no cure for autism, it’s wonderful to acknowledge the efforts being made by these citizens in order to lower the rate of autism and increase awareness.
