Applicants flock to Mariano`s job fair in Edgewater

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Mariano's in Edgewater is looking to fill 100 positions. Applicants made it through a driving rainstorm to meet with recruiters at the North Side job fair on Thursday.

After the harsh winter we've had, Chicagoans view the new store as a sign of spring and economic recovery.

In addition to groceries, Mariano's is in the business of awarding jobs and revitalizing neighborhoods. Residents have been eager to see this store open, which could lead to more businesses opening and hiring down the road.

Mariano's recruiters said they are looking for engaging personalities because they can teach skills to those who have potential.

"I've been out of work for six months and I'm hoping they will hire me," one applicant told FOX 32 News.

They say there's still intense competition for available jobs and people who are working still have a tough time making it.

"I'm trying to get a second job," another applicant said. "It's tough for people trying to make it, especially on your own. You have to work two or three jobs."

"It was a hard winter for weather and business," Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) said. "We hope this store leads to more development on Sheridan road and argyle and good things happening.

After Dominick's closed last December, private and ethnic grocery stores in the neighborhood did better sales. They are hoping when this store opens there will be room for growth for everyone.
