Singer Julia Haltigan to perform at her childhood music school

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The career of singer, songwriter, and guitar player Julia Haltigan is coming full circle. The New York City girl is coming back to the first stage she ever performed on at the Greenwich House Music School.

"I actually learned how to sing, like, right here," she says. "'Wheels on the Bus,' that's how I got my start."

Her seductive, raspy voice is making a mark in the music world. Haltigan says her style comes from idols like blues and jazz artist Tom Waits.

"It has a lot of influences I think that's because of my upbringing in New York," says Haltigan, who is completely self-taught and knew early on that this is exactly what she was born to do.

"I started learning guitar and writing songs when I was about 15," she says. "When I was in my early 20s I gave up everything else."

Haltigan was on the road for about a month, touring in the South East and California. Now she's back home where her career started, at nursery school.

"It's full circle for us, we are very happy to have her here with us," says Rachel Black, the director of Greenwich House Music School, which has been on Barrow Street in the West Village since 1905. It is mostly known as a piano school. 400 students participate in programs, which have produced some shining alumni.

"One of our alums just won Academy Award for best song for the animated feature 'Frozen,'" she says. "Bobby Lopez went to school here and studied under our piano chair, German Diez, who has taught at this school for over 60 years."

Haltigan will pay tribute to her first teachers during a Community Concert series. She'll perform along with a trumpet and upright bass player.

"Performing here is definitely exciting," Haltigan says.

You can hear her booming voice live at the Greenwich House Music School Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
