Fast food rally for minimum wage hike gets theatrical

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Hundreds of people protested Thursday outside a Wendy's franchise in Detroit saying their wages are being stolen.

The protestors staged a mock arrest, complete with a police officer chasing down Wendy the Corporate Pig and The Hamburglar.

The crowd marched after the staging, but say the struggle is real for those working in the fast food industry.

A class action lawsuit filed last month alleges McDonald's is cheating employees by forcing them to work off-the-clock and not paying for overtime.

Many fast food workers are on public assistance, costing taxpayers 7 billion dollars a year according to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley Labor Center.

The protest comes just one day after President Obama came to Ann Arbor to campaign for a nation-wide minimum wage hike. He's proposing the minimum wage gradually be raised to $10.10 an hour.

But the Michigan Restaurant Association has said repeatedly such an increase would dramatically increase menu prices and cost jobs, even going so far as to say it will put restaurants out of business.

The case was originally about workplace discrimination. Now it's dragged on for more than a decade despite the case appearing to be one that the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation can't win.
