Church-owned gym hopes to strengthen your body and soul

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Clearly the facility on Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood, Queens, is a gym. You've got the exercise equipment, Muscle Milk, and more. But I bet your gym doesn't have excerpts from the bible. The pastor here says they want to help the body mind and spirit.

You can build muscle while fortifying your faith at the New Olympia Health Club. The Rev. Henry Fury is the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church. He said church officials came up with their own GTL -- (gym, tan, liturgy) -- as a way to lift spirits and help the church financially.

You can pick up the word of the Lord at the front desk on your way to the treadmill.

Gym members we spoke to say it is definitely unique.

Upstairs is a weight room near a prayer room with inspirational readings.

Gym members don't have to belong to the church or even believe in anything, but if they want to flex their faith the pastor said he is ready to help.

The church doesn't hold its services here. Those are held at the actual church about 10 blocks from the gym.

The reverend said the gym breaks even from the $25 per month membership fee. Any extra goes to church's food pantry and soup kitchen.

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.

Heading into the U.S. Open, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have won 36 of the past 38 Grand Slam titles, a stretch dating to the 2005 French Open. Nowadays, there seems to be a growing sense — or hope, maybe — among the best of the rest on the men's tennis tour that the quartet might be more vulnerable than ever.
