Innovative Procedure Saves Little Boys Life

Posted: Updated:

A pioneering procedure saves the life of a little boy who has been battling a rare birth defect that made it impossible for him to breathe on his own.

Baby Garrett was born with a collapsed windpipe.

He would often turn blue, needing resuscitation.

Garrett is only 18-months old and has spent every minute in a hospital on a ventilator.

Miraculously, his parents found a surgeon who performed a breakthrough procedure.

Using ACT scan and 3d printer the doctor created a mold of Garrett's wind pipe to create splints that wrap around the windpipe. "Just like tent poles on the outside of the tent would be, holding the windpipe open," explains MD Glenn Green.

Doctors call Garrett's surgery and success and expect him to live a normal life.

The 3d printer uses a powder that will eventually be reabsorbed by the body.

Doctors say it will help stimulate cell and tissue growth.
