Bayonne Bridge construction rattles neighbors

Drilling and construction work wakes up people living next to the Bayonne Bridge in Bayonne, N.J. Some describe it as mini earthquakes at 6:45 in the morning to the afternoon.

The roadway of the Bayonne Bridge connecting Staten Island to Bayonne is being lifted 64 feet higher closer to the bridges steel arch so large container ships can fit under the bridge that was built in 1931. This will increase ship traffic and improve the area's economy.

The $1.3 billion, four-year project of the Port Authority requires heavy duty drilling and creating new foundation columns.

Some residents say their house walls have cracked from the construction and created dust storms. They add the Port Authority has not lived up to promises to ease the pain.

The Port Authority would not talk to us on camera. A spokesman issued a statement saying all city noise codes were being followed and the authority had instituted a noise management program. The statement also read: "Earlier this month the Port Authority began providing residents in the construction zones adjacent to the bridge with window replacement packages to further reduce noise levels."

Those window replacement packages require signing an agreement not to sue. Bayonne Mayor Mayor is advising residents to not the sign the waiver.

Resident Brian Cotter said that in six months the Port Authority has not come through with one promise for him except two car wash vouchers.
