Baby Giraffe Undergoes Life Saving Heart Surgery

Posted: Updated:

A giraffe at the Oklahoma City Zoo prepares for a major surgical procedure.

The six-month-old giraffe named Kyah was born with a heart defect that constricts her esophagus, which makes it nearly impossible for her to eat.

Surgeons at Oklahoma State University's Veterinary Health Center will perform the surgery early next week.

The zoo's associate veterinarian, Gretchen Cole, says if Kyah can't eat, she will not grow properly.

Cole explains, "If we leave her without correcting the condition, then she has zero chance of survival."

Kyah will have to make a difficult trip up the nearby interstate for the procedure as the construction on the zoo's own hospital is not yet completed.

The zoo plans to have the hospital opened later this year.
