Rep. Khan, Noor fail to gain endorsement in District 60 Convention

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Trying to obtain 60 percent in Saturday's DFL Senate District 60 Convention at DeLaSalle High School was not easy. In fact, it didn't happen.

Supporters of longtime Rep. Phyllis Kahn and political upstart Mohamed Noor packed the high school in an effort to have their name stamped on November's ballot. Saturday, neither won.

The fifth vote resulted in Rep. Khan picking up 147 votes (56.3%) and Noor with 113 votes (43.3%) meaning there was no DLF endorsement.

The drama leading up to Saturday's Convention was well documented. A caucus in January had to be cut short after police were called in due to pushing and shoving. Cooler heads prevailed the second time as around 500 enthusiastic people gathered to take in the political process. The stage was set for political drama a few years ago after redistricting efforts created a powerful new Somali voting block.

With neither candidate picking up 60%, convention delegates voted 148-95 to adjourn meaning both candidates will appear at the DFL Primary on August 12th.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
