Potholes Causing Major Headaches For Motorists

Posted: Updated:
Southwest Philadelphia -

The stretch of 84th Street at Bartram Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia is barely tenth of a mile long and is filled with problems. The road is a rim-rocking, tire-trashing, axle-snapping thrill ride with motorists saying it's been like that all winter long.

"It feels like it's kind of moving your car around, because all of your wheels are hitting holes simultaneously, at some point," one commuter said.

Repeated freeze-thaw cycles have caused the upper 2-3 inches of road surface to peel away, leaving behind a series of ruinous ruts, much worse than potholes.

"I thought Philadelphia as supposed to be taking care of the streets. And the snow's gone, so what's going on," an unsure motorist said.

84th Street is within the city limits leaving Pennsylvania Department of Transportation responsible for the road repairs.

The stretch of road was originally patched in September, but now requires a full repair. A few days of warm, dry weather will be needed, along with more than 16 tons of hot asphalt to resurface the road.

PennDot has promised the job will begin this Friday and may take several days.
