PHOENIX -

A man was arrested after police discovered a 1-year-old girl suffering from bites and they say she was also slapped.  Even more shocking -- police say the mother knew about the alleged abuse, but never did anything about it.

Authorities say the girl's 18-year-old parents are in custody for allegedly slapping, biting and pulling her hair.

Phoenix police say officers were sent to their home by the child's maternal grandparents, who called when they had not seen their granddaughter in a while.

Court documents released Monday show Abiezer Neftali Zuniga and Sandy Yesenia Aranda both are being held on suspicion of child abuse.

They are accused of abusing their baby daughter on multiple occasions from February 2014 to April.

After arriving at the family's home Saturday, police say they found the child with numerous bite marks and injuries.

Aranda told officers Zuniga got mad at the little girl two months ago and pulled a large amount of hair out of her head.  She also said he took the child into a bedroom and she could hear the girl screaming.

Zuniga admitted he had bitten the girl on multiple occasions -- on the face and legs after getting made at her for crying.

While describing biting the victim to police, officers say Zuniga began to laugh.

Aranda also told investigators that she and Zuniga would smoke marijuana at least once a week.

When police asked her why she did not report the abuse to them sooner, Aranda said it was because she did not want her daughter growing up without a father.

Police say Phoenix Fire Department paramedics were called to provide medical treatment to the girl.

At their initial court appearances Monday, Zuniga's bond was set at $75,000 and Aranda's bond was set at $5,000. Neither has an attorney yet.
