Mother Of 11-Year-Old Boy Caught In The Crossfire Speaks Out

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"It's sad, very sad. I'm hurt from it cause that's my baby," the shooting victim's mother, Tyeesha Callie said.

Tyeesha Callie spent Sunday night in the hospital with her 11-year-old son Kashie after he was caught in the crossfire and shot in the hip while he was innocently playing basketball on the 1500 block of Gratz Street. Now she wants to know why.

"Eleven years old just out here playing ball and he got caught in the crossfire. It's senseless," Callie told Fox 29.

Kashie Crawford remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery to remove the bullet that struck him. His mother says he may have to have additional surgery.

"Only a child got shot. What are they thinking. They don't care," she added.

Detectives were back on the scene at Oxford and Gratz where two gunmen opened fire on each other just before four Sunday afternoon. Police say at least 15 shots were fired. Kashie was shooting hoops with his friends in the middle of the block on this makeshift basket when he was hit by the gunfire. There are more than a dozen surveillance cameras on the block.

"There's always a block full of kids, like over a hundred kids on this block in the summer time or even a nice day," the shooting victim's mother explained.

Kashie's mom says the suspects involved in this shootout had no regard for human life.

"They need to put themselves in other people's shoes. How would they feel if this was their child," she said, "He's alive so that's all that matters."

Police say one of the suspects fled the area in a blue Mercury Grand Marquis. Police believe one of the gunman may have been wounded.

The victim is being treated for his injuries at St. Christopher's Hospital.
