PHOTOS: Minneapolis girl's brutal beating near Roosevelt HS caught on video

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Minneapolis police are looking for a suspect after a young woman was badly beaten in broad daylight, but they didn't know the violent episode was caught on camera until Fox 9 News called asking about it.

Although it may seem disturbing that someone would record the beating with a cell phone and then post it online, the images contained in the footage could be the evidence that leads police to an arrest.

"We seen a bunch of girls jumping and attacking her over some money," Terry Freeman recalled.

Freeman and his friends were heading up 30th Avenue when they walked up on two girls fighting. The graphic cell phone video shows one girl punching, kicking and pulling another's hair over a bloodstained sidewalk.

"That's my first time ever seeing a fight like that," witness Allente McReyonalds told Fox 9 News. "That's messed up -- like, she was bleeding from her nose and her mouth too."

The video, which was posted to Facebook, was taken down a short time later after several kids posted critical comments about filming instead of helping.

"It's stupid," Jordan Naber, a Roosevelt High School student, told Fox 9 News. "You see somebody in pain, you're going to help them. I mean, it's just natural."

Yet, witnesses say there was little they could do. The suspect took the victim's cell phone, used pepper spray, and threatened onlookers.

"I couldn't really do much but say, 'Stop!'" Freeman said. "I wanted to push her off so bad, but if I would have got maced, I would have got to swinging on everybody."

The violent robbery happened on Monday afternoon shortly after class let out at Roosevelt High School, and the victim is a minor.

"It's very scary," Marcy Tollefson, who called for help, said. "It made me angry that kids are beating up on kids."

Tollefson has lived in the Standish neighborhood for 45 years, and as the block club leader, she called 911 as soon as she saw what was going on. After the kids scattered, she helped the teenaged victim until police arrived.

"Sounded like they took her cell phone," Tollefson said. "She was sprayed in the face with something. It's frightening."

Police are investigating the case as an aggravated robbery, but they aren't releasing details about the incident since the victim is a minor; however, they hope the images will help identify the suspect.

Anyone with information about the assault is urged to call 612-692-8477.
