These days, the dream job is, well, just that - a dream.
Most of us spend our twenties just trying to land a job, much less one we like. But, believe it or not, dream jobs can be a reality.
Crain's Chicago Business has just released a list of the best places in Chicago to work for millennials and Generation X-ers.
These places prove that just because the whistle blows at 5 p.m., it doesn't mean you have to go home.
Sprout Social, a software organization that helps companies with their social media presence, embodies the idea of hard work stemming from people loving what they do.
From a media room to be used for after work gatherings, to an inter-office appreciation of all things pop culture – from Breaking Bad to Patrick Swayze – Sprout Social features a workstaff of 70 percent who are 30 years olf or under.
Jim Conti, the senior talent manager, says it's all about loving where you work.
"Here at Sprout we focus a lot on culture. So for us, culture means that you are comfortable coming into work, that you're doing a job you're proud of and that you're doing it with people you really enjoy, as well. So we make that really easy to do inside the office and outside the office as well."
Next up, DMC - an engineering software development company.
In their beautiful offices, bathed in natural light, you'll find a ping pong table, Whiskey (the office do) and, yes – a room dedicated to Patrick Swayze.
Frank Riordan says what makes this a great place for young professionals is the people you're working with – both during work hours and, yes, on vacations. There's a monthly activity fund of $2,700 for the team to use as they see fit.
"The coolest one is that there is an annual ski trip, there's restaurant week, they go to different plays like Book of Mormon, Beer Under Glass, they're very clever. They actually just went on a camping trip to Kentucky which was a big, big hit – so there's lots of different things that they do," Riordan said.
Finally, Context Media, a company that specializes in advertising for health care providers, is growing so rapidly that they're preparing to move out of their Michigan Avenue office.
Friendly inter-office competitions, free daily lunches and, an initiation quiz that focuses on your love of Patrick Swayze separate this from the normal advertising office.
Shradha Agarwal, the president and co-founder of Context Media, knows exactly why this company is so attractive to a younger working culture.
"Our culture is really based on a family environment. People here come in for a hug, a high five and they come in because they want to see their co-workers, they want to spend time together and they want to accomplish all these goals we set out as a team. And that work environment is what makes us unique – and it's the energy!"
So if you're that 20-something-year-old kid looking for that perfect dream job, don't give up – they're not just out there, some aren't too far away.
And they're waiting for you as long as you're a Patrick Swayze fan.
All three companies are hiring. For more information on the positions they are looking to fill check out the career pages of each of the companies featured in this story:
