When couples split up, it can get messy. So how do you avoid the top mistakes in dividing your assets?
Divorce attorney Rebecca Palmer joined us earlier on the show to explain how to avoid those pitfalls. When your kids, your money and even your retirement are involved, it's easy to get emotional. But Palmer said you should not let feelings get in the way.
"People get very emotional, and understandably," Palmer said. "But the problem is if you can't think straight, you're not going to make good decisions."
She also stressed how important it is to seek good council. Family and friends often give advice based on their own experience and baggage. Get a good lawyer or expert to be your advocate. With the right tools, Palmer said you can avoid wasting a lot of money in court and make the right choices for you and your family.
