New research shows that about only 40% of people get adequate amount of sleep. More doctors are actually prescribing sleep as a treatment for everything from obesity to ADHD and mental health.
Experts add that overlooking sleep as a major health issue can have deadly consequences. Pediatrician Dr. Alix Casler said it can lead to depression, obesity and anxiety.
Dr. Casler said the average adult needs around 7.5 hours, while teenagers need 9 hours.
She sees patients with a lack of sleep on a regular basis. Dr. Casler said there are a few ways you can get an even better night's sleep.
Start off by keeping electronics out of the bedroom. Using them before bed keeps you awake. Also, Dr. Casler said if you are going to shower or exercise in the evening, do it hours before going to sleep.
Make sure you are getting into bed around the same time every night. This will also help you get a good night's rest.
