Proposed Dam To Protect Cranford

Posted: Updated:
Cranford, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Residents in Cranford, N.J. and surrounding towns are seeking solutions to the devastating flooding they have experienced in the past few years after Hurricane Irene and other major storms.

The Army Corp of Engineers is looking at seven potential projects to mitigate flooding there. One of the proposals is building a dam outside of Milford.

Some Essex County residents, including County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, are against the plan.

“To be able to put a dam here and to take up everything that we have is just not right, "DiVincenzo says.  "And we’re not going to allow that to happen here in Essex County."

The former mayor of Cranford says the dam is needed.  He owns the Kilkenny House and Barry O'Donovan, experienced the flooding first hand during  Irene. Flood waters reached 12-feet inside the building.

“I had $300,000 worth of damage that was almost a career ending event," O'Donovan says.  "All my hopes and dreams. But the Silver lining is we did get open."

Some wonder why there is even any financial support for homes and businesses that are in flood plains. Bruce Bergen, Union County Freeholder stated Cranford wasn’t always a flood zone.

“Many of the people who got flooded, have bought houses that were never flooded before, they were not in a flood zone. There was no anticipation that over the years the problem would get so much worse and really rather quickly,” Bergen explained.
