GLENDALE, Ariz. -

A tow truck slammed into a Glendale power pole causing two nearby poles to topple over and catch fire.

The accident left many without power in the area of 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Close to 300 customers were in the dark after a tow truck snagged some sagging lines while driving in the area.

"It was a pop, then just all the lights went off, and I thought it was like a breaker, so I went outside and checked that's when I seen the pole was down I heard another pop and see the flames go up," said Jessica Garcia.

One of the power poles landed in someone's back yard and sparked a fire. Glendale Fire Department crews managed to control the blaze before it spread to the home.

Another pole landed on a home but did not catch fire.

"I thought it was like a gunshot; I ducked down because something fell," said Nicholas Felton.

"The pole was on top of the house on top of my bedroom in the back," said Barbara Howard.

Howard's family and seven other homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

Salt River Project crews cut off power to the neighborhood because of the down lines. At it's peak the outage left 1,900 people in the dark, many having to cope in the heat without air conditioning.

Firefighters say the accident happened due to low hanging lines.

"The power lines and Cox Communication cable lines sagged in the middle of the road, and they got caught on the top of the truck who, unfortunately, did not know that he caught them and kept driving and brought down two power lines as he tried to get through the street," said Michael Young with Glendale Fire.

Despite the fire and accident no one was injured in the accident. Power has been out to the area since 9:30 a.m., they hope to have service restored by 7 p.m..
