McBride's family release birthday balloons outside shooter's house

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - With messages like "I love you and miss you" written on balloons, Renisha McBride's closest family members gathered in front of the house where she was killed back in November 2013. Today would have been her 20th birthday.

The group released the balloons into the sky in her memory.

The house on Outer Drive is that of Ted Wafer. Wafer's attorneys say he fatally shot 19-year-old McBride because he believed she was breaking into his Dearborn Heights home. She'd crashed her car a half-mile away three hours earlier.

Wafer wants Wayne County Judge Qiana Lillard to recuse herself because she was a prosecutor until last summer. The defense says she's Facebook friends with prosecutors in the case, and other prosecutors support her campaign.

FOX 2's legal analyst believes the request will likely be denied.

Family members say a decision will be made in late April about which judge will hear the case.

The trial is set to begin in June.
