Firefighters battling wildfire south of Flagstaff

Posted: Updated:

The first wildfire of the season in our state burning near Flagstaff and it's called the Fisher Fire.

It's not that big so far, but it has a lot of potential to due quite a bit of damage to people's livelihoods.

The good news is; no structures are threatened and there are no reported injuries.

It's now 50 percent contained, but a big fire this early in the year could mean a long fire season ahead.

Nearly 200 acres burned in the Coconino National Forest, the timber fueling the fire up slopes near Fisher Point in Walnut Canyon.

It's the same area Hitchin Post Stables does their trail rides. "The forest service shut us down for the day for the safety of everyone," said Ron Craver.

It's just the beginning of the high season for the business, and they're worried the fire has reached their horse trails.

"It's fairly easy to assume it was human no lightening beyond that under investigation," said Don Muse.

A total of 8 crews of 20 people are working the fire, including 6 hot shot crews, and two helicopters are also helping fight the flames. Fire officials are confident they have the fire under control

"we got around the fire; now we are just securing our lines and trying to hold the wind," said Muse.

The Flagstaff area didn't get much snow pack this year getting the fire season off to an early start

"We are hopeful we'll get moisture down the road but right now it will make a long season if we don't get any from here on out... This is something we don't need to be dealing with any time we don't need it at all," said Muse.
