Rescuers Search For Orphaned Bobcat's Family

Posted: Updated:

Wildlife bobcat rescuers are in one north Texas neighborhood looking for a family of kittens and time may be running out.

When a mother bobcat has left the den the kittens have to fend for themselves.

This is Josie, a bobcat kitten, found wandering the streets in Carrollton earlier this week.

Bobcat rescuer, Valeri Marler recalls, "the mother disappeared about two weeks ago. The kittens were initially seen when they first came out of the den. There were three of them. Then over a period of three weeks they separated."

Now one is safely fed and cared for by the National Bobcat Rescue and Research Center in Terrell.

Marler worries Josie's siblings also may be on their own.

10 days is the usual duration from being orphaned to death if there's no intervention.

"We're really trying to find all of them and get them back together. The babies themselves are not going to survive very long without their mom," says Marler.

It's been a couple of weeks since the mother has been seen. Wildlife experts think she might've been trapped or worse: injured or killed, which is why they say it's so important to find the kittens.
