Man accused of attacking Sanford teen arrested

SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

UPDATE: Sanford police say they've arrested the man accused of attacking a teenage girl walking home from school on Friday.

The man has been identified as Jerome Gipson. Police say he was arrested on Saturday night about one block away near where the girl was walking on 27th Street and Palmetto Avenue.

Gipson now faces charges of battery.

Sanford police say a teenage girl was attacked while walking home from school on Friday.

Police now hope that by releasing the suspect's description they can help get him off the streets.

Officers say the girl was walking near 27th Street and Palmetto Avenue at around 4 p.m. on Friday when she was approached by a man.

They say he grabbed the girl by her hair and swung her around, but she was able to get away unharmed.

She then ran into a nearby home to call for help.

The victim told police the suspect was a black man in his mid-20s with a medium build.

She said he had a foul odor, twisty hairstyle and scruffy facial hair.

Police say he was last seen wearing a black tank top with holes and rolled up jeans.

Neighbors told Fox 35 they believe the suspect may be a homeless man.

Police say extra patrols will be on duty in the neighborhood following the attack.
