The new breakfast of weight loss champions could be dessert! A new study shows eating sweets for breakfast could actually help you lose a few pounds.
Registered Dietitian with UF Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health Dawn Napoli helped break down the study. She said it studied two groups of overweight individuals, the first who ate healthy breakfasts every day such as eggs and whole grain toast while the other ate double the calories with breakfasts that included sweets.
Napoli said those who ate double the calories actually continued to lose weight when the first group stopped dropping pounds. She said that is because they did not feel as hungry, so they ate less for lunch and dinner. That group also did not crave sweets later in the day.
While Napoli does not recommend eating solely dessert for breakfast, she does say if you are going to eat sugar or sweets, breakfast is the best time to do so. That way you have time to burn off those calories when you get up, move around and start your day.
She also said it is a good idea to always pair sugary foods with protein and a whole grain, especially in the morning. That way the sugar takes longer to be released into your blood stream.
Sweet cereal is a good option, because paired with a low-fat milk, it meets that sugar craving but is still better than actual dessert.
However, Napoli made it clear if you are going to have sugary sweet food for breakfast, make sure you still eat a small portion size.
