Man Completes 18,000 Piece Puzzle

Posted: Updated:

It took more than six years, but an Iowa man has finally completed a gigantic world map puzzle. It looks like a painting of four historical world maps, but it's actually a puzzle 18,000 puzzle pieces.

No wonder it took Leroy Knoch six and a half years to complete the challenge. It turns out this isn't the only multi-piece puzzle Leroy has completed.

A few years ago, he completed a three panel puzzle of one of Michelangelo's famous paintings "Creation of Adam." That puzzle had 12,000 pieces and it took Leroy four years to complete.

"It is interesting to me and it consumes my time and I just enjoy it," he said.

"We joked about putting it on the ceiling but we was afraid it might fall to pieces if we put it on the ceiling," his wife Susie said.

Leroy says the key is separating out the pieces first. He said, "You'll have them with three pieces. Three holes in a piece. And then you'll have it with three points and a hole. And I go through the whole puzzle that I have out and sort the pieces out like that."

Leroy says he began putting together large puzzle in 1991. He had heart problems and as part of his recovery, his son suggested he do puzzles and he hasn't looked back ever since.

"Just got to have good concentration. And enjoy it. That's the big thing.... If you don't enjoy a puzzle you ain't gonna put them together. I'll put it that way, "he said.

Leroy and his wife will celebrate 50 years together in December.
