PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Volunteers are working to help save one of the only stadiums still in existence where black professional baseball teams once played.

Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson was once home to the New York Black Yankees, the New York Cubans and other Negro League teams.

Eleven members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame played there, including Larry Doby. He integrated the American League in July 1947, just months after Jackie Robinson broke the National League's color barrier - actions being celebrated this week by Major League Baseball.

The crumbling Art Deco stadium was granted national historic landmark status in 2013. Lawmakers are pushing to designate it as part of the nearby Great Falls National Historical Park.

Hundreds of volunteers are expected Wednesday to help paint over the graffiti-covered stadium walls.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
