Report: More people using apps than search engines

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There's an app for everything. Now instead of searching, you can swipe, wipe, touch and even tell technology what to do.

"Well, here she is, I'm thrilled for you to meet our truly personal digital assistant for Windows phone and yes, her name is Cortana," said Joe Belfiore, a Corporate Vice President at Microsoft.

As the World Wide Web celebrates its 25th anniversary, 1871 CEO Howard Tullman asked on his blog, "Does anyone type WWW as part of an URL anymore? Does anyone type a URL anymore?"

"About 80 percent of the people today are interacting online through apps and that's a huge change. Also mobile, 75 percent of all the interactions on Facebook are through mobile now," said Tullman.

Fox 32's Tisha Lewis reports, for the first time, more people are using apps to reach their online destination instead of search engines.

Many of Chicago's latest apps are created at Tech Hub 1871.

Tullman predicts two years from now, searching will be "so last year" and the pivot has already started.

"Amazon just announced that they're actually going to pre-ship a lot of stuff that they think you're going to order in the future, so it will be nearer, geographically, to you," said Tullman.

Apparently apps and social media wiped away the guesswork that goes into companies connecting with consumers.

"Google is a very smart system built by engineers and what it does is it tries to extract from what you've looked for, what you're interested in and that was the best we could do up until Facebook," said Tullman.

There was no response from Google when asked about its bread and butter search platform that could become obsolete.

"You have 1.3 billion people raising their hands and saying here is exactly what I'm interested in," said Tullman.
