Carolina Farmers Work to Protect Crops From Cold

Posted: Updated:
Farmers across the Carolinas are preparing for frigid temperatures overnight Wednesday. Workers at Barbee Farms in Cabarrus County have been covering vegetable plants and changing their irrigation systems, but they realize there’s only so much they can do. Farm Manager Brent Barbee said, “It’s a lot like going to Vegas-farming. It’s definitely taking a gamble.”

The odds haven’t been in his favor. He says around 10,000 plants on his family’s farm, including tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupe, squash, and some other summer favorites are in danger because of the freezing temperatures.

Anna Barbee manages the produce stand at Barbee Farms. Anna said, “It’s unnerving, but yet we take what the good Lord sends us.”

The Barbees say it’s too early to tell how much damage has been done and how much produce prices could go up. Brent says the farm suffer a 30-40% loss. He said, “If we had a total crop kill on everything, we would be looking at 0 income for us for the better part of two months.”

Brent Barbee said, “It’s a hope and a prayer, hoping that we can save everything.”
