Atlanta Watershed Dept. under review after "hefty raises"

Posted: Updated:

The commissioner of the Department of Watershed Management is under fire for "hefty raises" she handed out to mangers.

Jo Ann Macrina, issued raises ranging from $15,000 to $25,000 to professional staff, like the department's security manager and Public Information Officer.

Mayor Kasim Reed claims Macrina issued these raises without permission. He says he "did not approve nor did he authorize" the raises. Reed has since rescinded the raises.

Atlanta City Council member Michael Bond says the raises were "poorly timed."

"It's tough to explain, police and firefighters put their life on the line, every single day," Bond said.

Among what city workers see as the most egregious raise, the $15,000 raise given to a security chief who was recently under scrutiny due to the disappearance of almost $1 million of equipment. The disappearance is believed to be a result of internal theft.

According to the mayors office, the entire Department of Watershed Management is now under review.
