Anaheim's Wonderful WonderCon

Posted: Updated:

It was Easter weekend and while some Angelenos spent their time at Mass, there was a group of passionate people who showed up in mass to celebrate some of their favorite supernatural and super-powered humans, demi-gods and immortals at the annual WonderCon comic book convention at the Anaheim Convention Center.

WonderCon started in 1987 in Oakland, California, then known as "The Wonderful World of Comics Convention." In 2012 WonderCon moved from its home at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to the Anaheim convention center and though its producers, the same folks who put on the world famous San Diego ComicCon want to have it back in San Francisco at some point, I'm thankful that it is right in my own backyard... a little closer than San Diego.

I know we tend to show a lot of the Masquerade, or CosPlay (Costume Play) action that goes on at these events on our broadcast news shows but there is so much more that goes on at these events than folks showing up dressed as their favorite heroes and villains. There are vendors there exhibiting products, everything from comic books to movies. You can pick up action figures, statues, animation (anime) and much, much more. This year there will be screenings for the anime videos Hyakko, Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends, Eureka Seven: AO, the popular Bleach franchise and more. In addition, there will be a children's film festival and panels lead by renowned comics artists, writers and executives talking about everything from diversity in comic books and TV to the Golden Age of comic books and what made that period different than any other.

In the last decade or so, these conventions that I grew up going to and buying the bulk of my own comic book collection at, became as much about promoting sci-fi and fantasy television and films as they were about the paper-based form of fantasy entertainment. This year is no different! Warner Bros. will be there, hosting a panel talking about some of their upcoming films which include Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Storm and the much anticipated (by me) Godzilla. TNT will be in the house talking about season 4 of Falling Skies and we'll even get the ultimate nerd debate (one I've had on more than one occasion), a panel which will discuss the psychology of Star Trek vs. Star Wars: Episode III.

Want to see what WonderCon is all about? You'll either have to wait until next year, head down to San Diego, CA for ComicCon this summer, or live vicariously through the pics in the photo gallery above!Tell us in the comments below what your favorite pic was?
