Protesters gather outside Liam Neeson's home

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The escalating debate over carriage horses in New York City has gotten personal.

Dozens of protestors gathered outside actor Liam Neeson's Upper West Side condo on Saturday to take the issue right to his door.

Neeson is a supporter of the horses staying on the streets, but PETA and Mayor Bill de Blasio want them gone.

Standing in a straight line outside the actors condo, demonstrators held signs criticizing Liam Neeson's position that city carriage horses should keep working.

“It's time for Liam Neeson to stop spreading misinformation and stop supporting this industry” said one PETA activist.

The protestors along with Mayor Bill de Blasio are pushing to retire the horses in favor of replacing them with electric vintage-style cars

Liam Neeson has embraced a new role as supporter of the city's carriage horse industry

In March, Neeson showed up at the stables and last week he penned an op ed in the NY Times noting a recent poll showing a majority of New Yorkers do not support a carriage horse ban.

Colm Mckeever, who has driven a carriage for 25 years, doesn't think tourists and customers are interested in the replacement cars.

“It's just awful, a stressful situation to be in” said McKeever. “The horses as everyone can see are in great shape.. It's our livelihoods.. “

The issue has not come up for a vote within New York City Council yet.

Legislation is still being crafted.
