Only On Fox: Solving The Murder Of Amber Long

PHILADELPHIA -

Three months after a purse-snatching and murder stunned the city. Homicide detectives work new breaks in the case.

Fox 29’s Dave Schratwieser reports

“We have to find the killers of Amber Long,” Homicide Unit Captain James Clark said.

Captain James Clark has been running the city's Homicide Unit for six years.

Hundreds of murder cases have crossed his desk, and he’s the first one to say he'd like to see every murder solved for the victims’ families.

However, the murder of Amber Long caught on tape back in January, has Clark and veteran homicide detectives still searching for answers and the suspects.

“It's one of the saddest murders that I’ve seen . Anytime you have a daughter that's killed right in front of her mother and ultimately dies in her mother's arms . It's very, very tragic,” Clark said.

The 26-year-old architect and her mother were on their way to pick up Amber's car on Front Street in Northern Liberties after a night out when they were approached by two men. One had a gun. Detectives say as they reached Amber and her mother, Stephanie, one snatched her mom's purse, the other grabbed Amber's new $14 purse and spun her around, then shot her at point blank range.

“She didn't put up a fight at all, there's no reason in the world this individual had to shoot her,” Clark said. “There's only one shooter. My advice to the other individual or the individual driving the vehicle, we're gonna get you so you need to get ahead of this, so come in and tell us what happened.”

Amber died in her mom's arms, touching off a city wide manhunt for her killers. The surveillance tape surfaced a few days after the murder showing the suspects and a getaway driver circling the area looking to rob someone.

“There's a four door sedan we believe it's New York tags from what we could make out from video surveillance cameras. When we break this case and we will, that's gonna be one of the big leads in this case,” Clark said.

After the murder, police began a painstaking search for the suspects and their getaway car. They have traced dozens of rental cars like the one in the video. They went block by block on the suspects' escape route. They also secured hours of surveillance tapes from over a dozen locations trying to identify the car, hoping it would lead to the gunmen.

“We've gotten a whole lot of tips that have come in, the investigation's taken a lot of different turns and different spins, unfortunately right now nothing had developed, but we're working very hard to solve this murder,” Clark said.

Police have been helped somewhat by a $37,000 reward put up by the city , the Fraternal Order of Police and several others.
