NYPD Twitter hashtag backfires

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice".

Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers. But then NYPD critics caught on and started posting some not-so-flattering shots of New York's finest.

Some of the photos were taken during Occupy Wall Street.

"NYPD engages with its community members, changing hearts and minds one baton at a time," @occupywallstnyc tweeted sarcastically.

Others posted pictures from embarrassing episodes in the department's history, such as a photo of David Ranta, who served 23 years for a murder he didn't commit and was released due to police misconduct.

Some are just plain silly. One picture shows cops apparently writing someone in a Minnie Mouse costume a ticket in Times Square.

One shows a sleeping officer on the subway.

And there is one taken at the West Indian Day Parade showing a blush-worthy moment the officer regrets.

By Tuesday afternoon #myNYPD was the most popular hashtag in New York, second in the nation, and fourth most popular hashtag on Twitter around the world.

NYPD Deputy Chief Kim Royster said in a statement: "The NYPD is creating new ways to communicate effectively with the community. Twitter provides an open forum for an uncensored exchange and this is an open dialogue good for our city."

A Delta Air Lines flight from La Guardia Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida, was diverted to Jacksonville because of a dispute between passengers over a reclining seat. Delta reportedly says the flight was diverted Monday night when a woman got into an argument with a passenger behind her when the woman was trying to recline her seat while the other passenger was trying to sleep on the tray table.
