COCOA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Cocoa Police Officer Ben Erskine is no longer a part of the Brevard County Sheriff's elite Game Over Task Force, the Cocoa Police Department and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office has confirmed with FOX 35. Erskine was arrested in late February for driving under the influence.
According to his arrest report, on February 23, at 2 a.m., Erskine was clocked traveling 27 miles over the posted speed limit on U.S. Highway 1 in Rockledge, near Coral Sands Drive. When a Rockledge police officer attempted to pull Erskine over, he allegedly sped away, but he was stopped five miles away by two other officers who paced him at 85 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The report goes on to indicate that the Cocoa officer smelled of alcohol when he got out of his car and failed three field sobriety exercises. He was arrested and taken to jail, but as of right now, he still has his job.
The Cocoa Police Department and the State Attorney’s office are both investigating, and a decision about his future employment will not be made until they are complete.
We checked his personnel file and found no previous disciplinary record. Erskine was on the Sheriff's Game Over Task Force for two years, before he was relieved of that assignment following his DUI arrest. He has a court date in May.
