The board of the Salvation Army in Concord will meet Thursday morning to talk about whether or not it will take over operation of the Soup Kitchen at the end of June. The Soup Kitchen serves the homeless during lunch hours, and it is currently run by Cooperative Christian Ministry in a building on Patterson Avenue in Concord.

Major Jerry Lyles with the Salvation Army says his organization found out only weeks ago that the current partnership with Cooperative Christian Ministry to run the Soup Kitchen ends June 30. Lyles says there's not another single location for the homeless to go for meals during lunch hours. He says groups of churches alternate locations and serve lunchtime meals throughout the area, but no locations, other than the Patterson Avenue spot, serve meals in the same building everyday.

Lyles says the Salvation Army doesn’t have the money right now to step in and operate the kitchen. He says they’ll first look into whether or not the people they serve will be able to get to other lunchtime meal services and if not, he says they’ll find a way to keep the kitchen open. Lyles says, “We’re not going to drop the ball and let anybody go hungry. We’re going to do what is best for this community.”

Keysha McDonald brings her three kids to the soup kitchen when she needs to, like now during spring break, and in the summer months. McDonald said, “It’s a good thing that we’re able to come here, and they welcome us in to have lunch.” She says her kids enjoy having a good meal. McDonald said, “When they come here, they have everything that they really like to eat.”
