Governor McCrory Meets With Medal of Honor Nominee Sgt. Kyle White

Posted: Updated:
A Charlotte vet will receive the nation’s highest military award from President Barack Obama – The Medal of Honor.

While that ceremony is still 3 weeks out, on Wednesday, former Army Sergeant Kyle White was honored by the North Carolina military community, and Governor Pat McCrory.

“Sgt. White is a true American hero and we are forever indebted for his service to our nation,” said Governor Pat McCrory.

“It was an honor to meet Kyle today in Charlotte and I look forward to building a lasting relationship with them as we continue North Carolina’s tradition of supporting our military and the men and women who serve in our armed forces.”

“As far as the battle – he says it just feels like yesterday. I can still remember the temperature and it’s very vivid in my head,” said Sgt. Kyle White.

November 9th, 2007 – it’s a day that Sgt. Kyle White says he won’t forget anytime soon.

“You know on that day – it was the worst day of my life. I lost a lot of good friends and lost 6 heroes,” said White.

White wears a bracelet to remember his fellow serviceman who died in combat.

“It’s just nice to be given a second chance and do the best you can with it. When we were on our way back, we were ambushed around 3:30 in the afternoon. I hear a pop and then it seemed like the whole valley erupted in fully automatic and AK fire and grenades,” said White.

But now that he’s back to a civilian life – White says he’s adjusting well.

Since deployment in Afghanistan, he’s gone to college, found a job and even a girlfriend.

“There are 2 things after that deployment – one is taking showers because we didn’t have good ones there. I’m also a foodie and I like to eat extra amounts of food. I’m 27—and I feel normal. I am a regular guy – I sleep in on the weekends.”

White says he’s excited to receive the prestigious “Medal of Honor” award.

“You know the part I am excited about the most is to see the guys I’m excited about – it’s like a reunion they get to attend the ceremonies and that’s the part I’m looking forward to.”

White is just one of a handful of people who are still living to receive award.

President Barack Obama will present the award on May 13th at the nation’s capital.
