South End Community Focused On Parks & Crime

Posted: Updated:
Residents of the South End community meet tonight at Byron's South End, where they discussed crime statistics and displayed the first images of a new park, Wilmore Sentential Park.

The park will be on the corner of S. Tryon St and Kingston Ave. This area in years past has been a hot spot for drug deals and squatters, but now Charlotte Mecklenburg Police have cleaned up the location. With CMPD's efforts, along with community development, crime rates have dropped nearly 65% in the last five years.

"At one point we had some drug activity, which we cleaned up and moved out of there," said Officer Shawn Franklin with CMPD Central Division.

The rapid development in South End is one of the main reasons the Parks & Rec. Department in Mecklenburg Co. has decided to move forward with the park.

"There's been a tremendous amount of residential and commercial growth in this community," said W. Lee Jones, who is the Division Director of Capital Palnning Services with Parks & Rec. "We meet with some of the representatives of the community...and got some of the ideas of things they want in the park," added Jones.

An estimate of the park will cost $600,000. That will include all fees for a consultant, permits, and things that will be placed in the park.

"Because of the small size of the park we believe we can capture a lot of the things the people will want within that budget," said Jones. "The longer it takes, the cost of labor and materials goes up and we may have to amend that budget request," Jones added.
