Contract awarded for 'Ultimate I-4 Project' redesign and construction

Posted: Updated:
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Construction on the $2.3 billion makeover of Interstate 4 could start as early as Christmas.

On Wednesday, it was announced that I-4 Mobility Partners, led by the  Swedish construction conglomerate Skanska, will be in charge of the 21-mile redesign of the roadway from State Road 434 in Longwood to Kirkman Road in the tourist corridor, known as the "Ultimate I-4 Project."

The I-4 Ultimate project adds four tolled express lanes to I-4 while maintaining the existing free general use lanes. The express lanes will be operated with variable tolls which will be adjusted to improve traffic flow throughout the corridor. FDOT will retain the toll revenue and will control the toll rates.

Construction is expected to begin in 2015 and be completed in 2021.  More project information may be found at www.moving-4-ward.com
